Diamond tools for rock core sampling

Serving Oil & Gas, Mining, Earth Sciences, and Geotechnics

Sampling Demands Across Industries

Rock core sampling is a foundational step in subsurface exploration. In the Oil & Gas industry, core analysis is central to reservoir characterization, fluid studies, and SCAL/RCA programs. In the mining sector, cores provide vital information on mineral distribution and lithological structure. Meanwhile, in Earth Science research and geotechnical engineering, core samples support everything from academic studies to infrastructure design and slope stability analysis.

Despite the differences between these fields, the common denominator is the need for precision cutting and core extraction tools. Once the core reaches the surface, it undergoes a sequence of technical operations—trimming, slabbing, or plugging—each requiring the right diamond tooling. Without the proper tools, these operations can compromise the integrity of the sample and reduce the reliability of the analysis.

Geofactory has developed a complete range of high-performance diamond tools—both blades and drill bits—specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of these sectors. Our mission is to support accurate, reproducible, and efficient sampling operations in all geological environments.

Diamond Blades – From Soft Sediments to Ultra-Hard Formations

Geofactory’s diamond blades are engineered to handle the full spectrum of geological formations, from fragile sediments to extremely hard intrusives and volcanics. Each blade is carefully designed to balance durability, cutting speed, and precision. For soft or moderately consolidated formations such as shale, clay, potash, gypsum, and tuff, we offer continuous rim blades in the 200–350 mm range. These are particularly well-suited to dry or semi-wet trimming applications, where minimal vibration and smooth edge finishing are essential.

In contrast, harder and more abrasive rocks demand more robust solutions. Our segmented blades, available from 350 mm to 550 mm in diameter, are built for high￾volume slabbing and longitudinal cuts. These blades are ideal for rocks such as:

  • Basalt, Andesite, Hard Schist, and Limestone
  • Granite, Gabbro, Amphibolite, Pegmatite, and Gneiss
  • Quartzite, Rhyolite, Chert, Jasperlite, and Red Granite

To address these conditions, we use high-concentration industrial diamonds, custom bond matrices, and reinforced sandwich steel cores that reduce noise and vibration key features for maintaining both safety and precision in laboratory environments. Our blades are compatible with Geofactory’s saws (Explo Core Saw, Mining Core Saw, Dual￾Axis Saw) and adaptable to other platforms.

Diamond Drill Bits – Extracting core with Scientific Integrity
Plug sampling is a core requirement in SCAL and RCA workflows. At this stage, accuracy and preservation of the internal structure of the sample become essential. Whether for porosity, permeability, capillary pressure, or saturation tests, the quality of the plug directly impacts the reliability of laboratory results.
Geofactory manufactures diamond core drill bits optimized for plug extraction across various lithologies and equipment types. Our offering includes segmented bits for abrasive or heterogeneous formations, crown head bits for clean, consistent cuts in consolidated rock, and thin wall bits especially suited for fragile or unconsolidated formations such as marl, tuff, or high-porosity shales.
We work closely with laboratories and engineers to define the appropriate bit diameter, wall thickness, diamond grain, and bond type. These parameters are selected according to the rock type, lubricants used (e.g., brine, mineral oil), and rotational speed, ensuring optimal performance and minimal alteration of the core.

A Multisectoral Approach to Geological Excellence
At Geofactory, we understand that no single tool fits all geological conditions. That’s why we take a multisectoral, application-driven approach to tool design. In the Oil & Gas industry, our tools are widely used for reservoir studies and core preservation in OBM environments. In mining, their robustness and cutting efficiency allow high-volume slabbing of exploration cores in demanding field conditions, including remote or tropical locations. For Earth Science laboratories, we offer blades and bits adapted to research on diverse rock types. And in geotechnical engineering, our solutions help ensure sample integrity in critical urban and infrastructure projects.
Our diamond tools are not standalone products—they are part of a broader strategy of support, customization, and technical advice. We assist our clients in selecting the right blade or bit for their equipment, formation type, and analytical goals. From the field to the lab, from a soft clay layer to a siliceous volcanic intrusive, Geofactory’s diamond tools deliver performance, consistency, and confidence making them an essential link in the geological sampling chain.
