Developing rock saws for the mining industry: Why Geofactory uses Sidobre granite

Developing geological sampling equipment starts with choosing the right reference rock

Every manufacturer of geological sampling equipment faces the same challenge during product development. Although Rock Saws, diamond blades and rock sample preparation equipment are designed to process an almost infinite variety of geological formations, it is simply impossible to have access to every rock type encountered by geologists around the world. Granite, gneiss, sandstone, shale, limestone, quartzite, basalt, halite and hundreds of other lithologies all exhibit different mechanical behaviours, making exhaustive laboratory testing unrealistic.

This challenge is even greater for equipment developed for the mining industry, where Rock Saws are routinely used to cut some of the hardest igneous and metamorphic formations encountered during exploration and production. Even rocks belonging to the same geological family may respond very differently during core cutting. Mineral composition, grain size, quartz content, abrasiveness, fracture patterns and compressive strength all have a direct influence on cutting performance, diamond blade wear, machine stability and, ultimately, the preservation of valuable geological samples.

Testing every new Rock Saw or diamond blade on every rock type found worldwide would be technically impossible. Instead, Geofactory has developed an engineering methodology based on carefully selected reference rocks that provide consistent, repeatable and representative testing conditions. This approach allows every new machine and every product improvement to be evaluated objectively under identical geological conditions.

For hard-rock mining applications, Geofactory has established long-term partnerships with professionals operating in the Sidobre, located in the Tarn region of southern France. Recognised as one of Europe’s largest granite quarrying regions, the Sidobre has supplied high-quality granite for monuments, civil engineering and architectural projects for centuries. These partnerships provide Geofactory with reliable access to representative granite blocks directly from the quarries, ensuring consistency throughout our engineering and product development programme.

Sidobre Granite offers exceptional physical and mechanical characteristics for validating Rock Saws and diamond blades. Formed from a fully crystallised igneous rock composed primarily of quartz, feldspar, mica and biotite, it has an apparent density exceeding 2,600 kg/m³, a porosity below 0.5%, and a compressive strength greater than 190 MPa. Its homogeneous crystalline structure, excellent wear resistance and high durability make it an ideal benchmark for evaluating core cutting performance and the reliability of geological sampling equipment.

Engineering better rock Saws through representative geological testing

At Geofactory, Sidobre Granite is far more than a demonstration material. It has become one of the key engineering references used throughout the development of our Rock Saws, diamond blades and rock sample preparation solutions.

Every new machine, blade design or diamond segment configuration is tested using the same geological reference material. Maintaining identical testing conditions enables our engineering team to compare cutting speed, blade wear, vibration levels, machine rigidity, cutting stability and sample quality with complete objectivity. Because the rock remains constant, any improvement observed can be directly attributed to the engineering changes rather than natural variations in the geological material.

Our partnerships in the Sidobre region also provide access to gneiss, allowing Geofactory to validate its equipment on a representative metamorphic rock. Unlike granite, gneiss presents a foliated structure that generates different cutting forces and mechanical stresses during core cutting. Evaluating both lithologies enables our engineers to optimise machine performance across two of the most common hard-rock environments encountered in the mining industry.

The same engineering philosophy is applied to sedimentary formations. For specific developments, Geofactory also performs testing on Fontainebleau Sandstone, internationally recognised for its exceptionally high quartz content and widely used as a reference material for abrasive sedimentary rocks. While no single rock can represent every geological formation, combining granite, gneiss and Fontainebleau Sandstone provides representative benchmarks for validating equipment intended for a broad range of geological sampling applications.

This methodology allows Geofactory to develop Rock Saws that deliver consistent cutting performance while preserving sample integrity, reducing blade wear and improving long-term reliability under demanding mining conditions.

From geological reference materials to reliable mining equipment

Selecting Sidobre Granite is not about choosing a famous natural stone. It is about establishing a repeatable engineering benchmark capable of supporting continuous product development over many years.

Every modification introduced on a Rock Saw, every new diamond blade design and every improvement made to our rock sample preparation equipment is first evaluated using the same geological reference materials. This repeatable methodology enables our engineers to quantify improvements in cutting efficiency, machine rigidity, vibration control, blade life and sample preservation with confidence.

Once these developments have been validated using our benchmark materials, they are subsequently evaluated on additional geological formations representative of real mining applications. This progressive validation process significantly reduces development uncertainty while ensuring that new equipment performs reliably under a wide range of geological conditions encountered by mining companies around the world.

At Geofactory, we believe that developing high-performance geological sampling equipment requires much more than mechanical design alone. It requires objective engineering, carefully selected geological reference materials and strong technical partnerships with recognised quarrying professionals. By combining repeatable geological testing with continuous engineering development, Geofactory continues to improve its Rock Saws, diamond blades and rock sample preparation solutions, providing the mining industry with reliable equipment designed to deliver accurate core cutting, preserve sample integrity and support high-quality geological data throughout the exploration process.
